Mitsushige Shimizu

Mitsushige Shimizu is a Japanese calligraphy artist who has devoted decades to sharing the spirit of Shodō through authentic artworks. Each piece is created with care and respect for tradition—so viewers can appreciate not only the beauty of brushwork, but also the cultural depth behind each character.

Artist Statement

Mitsushige Shimizu’s mission is to share the depth of Japanese calligraphy through authentic works and careful, accessible storytelling. Each piece is created with respect for tradition—while staying attentive to how it will live in a modern space, whether as a quiet focal point in a home, a meaningful gift, or a symbol of a new beginning.

Start of Career

Began studying calligraphy in 1950 and has continued to refine his skills ever since.

Mentorship History

  • Takako Oishi: Studied under Takako Oishi, a judge for Nitten, learning the fundamentals and spirit of calligraphy.
  • Kasumura Masuda: Learned the historical and theoretical aspects of calligraphy from Kasumura Masuda, honorary professor at Kokugakuin University.
  • Kozo Yasuda: Inherited the techniques and artistry of seal engraving under the guidance of renowned engraver Kozo Yasuda.

Received multiple awards in recognition of outstanding achievements in the field of calligraphy.

Solo Exhibitions

Held numerous solo exhibitions at galleries across Japan, expanding recognition of his work.
